Are you thinking about booking a professional outdoor Dog Photography session and are not sure how it works or that your dog may not be on their best behaviour, then this blog will tell you all you need to know about my approach to photographing your dog (and you). I’ll discuss what to expect on the session, how to prepare your dog(s) and yourself and how the session works.

Before the actual day of your session, we’ll have a chat about where the session will take place and the type of photographs you would like such as portraits, action, breed standard and whether you want to be in them. Regarding location this is entirely up to you, what is most important is that the location is a safe location for you and your dog so that you are both comfortable in the environment, this can be a wooded walk, your garden, a secure dog park or the beach! I can recommend a number of lovely walks around rural Nottinghamshire. 

My priority when photographing your dog is their and our safety, so please let me know if you have any concerns or your dog has any triggers with other dogs, people, roads etc. I want you and your dog to be comfortable throughout the session.

On the day of the session we would simply go for a walk or spend some time in the garden or dog park together so that your dog gets to know me and my camera. Don’t worry if your dog is too shy or too friendly, too hyper or very shy we will work at their pace and get some great images regardless. You know that your dog will pick up on how you are feeling so relax and have fun – this will allow your dogs personality to shine through, so we will keep everything fun and very light hearted. It’s important to remember that regardless of what they are doing on the day, your dog is not doing anything wrong. The goal is to get a varied galley of images for you focusing on what images you’d like from the session. Normally I start with the action shots to allow your dog to release a little of the excitement and energy and then focus on the portraits. This is of course set by your dog and the pace will be adjusted on what they are telling us.

Most dog owners will tell me that they are worried their dog wont sit still long enough to have their phot taken, don’t worry they wont need to sit for long and I know a few tricks of the trade to capture their attention! Also don’t worry if your dog needs to be kept on a lead – I can make that disappear when I edit the images!

A dog photography session last around 1-2hrs depending on your dogs energy and where we are, garden or dog park session tend to be around 1 hr, walk in the woods may be nearer 2 hrs. We will know when your dog has had enough of being the centre of attention. Expect to be involved in the session and don’t worry as I will guide you to what I want and what we are trying to achieve.The aim of my dog photography is to capture the connection between you and your dog as well as stunning images of them on their own. Don’t worry if you feel uncomfortable being in the images as there are lots of different poses that will capture the pair of you together without your face showing. When we have finished your fabulous session I then edit the images which takes approx 2 weeks, to produce a private gallery for you. I like where possible to reveal the gallery in person and show you a range of different products to display the images in your home.
