So as I look out of the window spring is definitely starting to take hold and thoughts are turning to what to wear for your photo session with your Horse(s) – which is the most common question I get asked when someone has booked a session with me. Don’t worry I’m here to guide you through what and what not to wear.
A session with me generally allows for 3 outfit changes – styles, outfits, colours and accessories are a big part of the pre consultation call, if in doubt bring everything! and we can work outfit best outfits for the locations on the day. This is a great time to reacquaint yourself with your wardrobe and rediscover some favourite outfits.
I try and think of outfits in 3 separate ways:-
Casual,
Smart Casual
Smart.
Casual – what you might wear for a quick trip out to the local pub for example so think Jeans, country or ankle boots, fitted shirt, polo shirt or nice jumper hoodie
Smart Casual – What you might wear for a nice lunch or meal out with friends
Layer on top of the jeans and boots with smart blouse/shirts or jumpers, tweed jacket, and country coats
Smart – let your imagination go wild – This can be as simple as smart summer dress or wrap all the way to DJ and Ball gown! Dress uniforms for members of armed or Uniformed services
My main piece of advice is … wear something that you are going to be comfortable in. The more comfortable you feel on the day of the session the more relaxed and confident you will be in front of the camera. it may be better to choose a old favourite than to try something that you may not be 100% comfortable in. Also think of layers this allows for us to have some variety in images so gilet’s, pashminas/wraps and jackets are brilliant additions to any session.Try and avoid pure white or very bright colours and dramatic patterns. Also avoid clothes with big logos or sparkly elements as sometimes these can cause a distraction in the image.
Before I go lets quickly talk about Jodhpurs and Show Outfits – wearing Jods on a session is entirely upto you – a smart pair of jods with ankle boots and a nice muted polo shirt can work well as a casual outfit. If you want to wear jodhpurs make sure they are cream or dark colours – white clothes will sometimes come out in photos with a blue tinge!
A full show out fit is really smart especially with everything clean, pressed and boots shining. I bet that if you compete you will have lots of images of you and your horse in show outfits that you picked up at events or that friends may have taken for you, Ive mentioned in previous blogs that this is a special moment for you and your horse, to have images that show the connection between the two of you that will show off your best sides on the walls of your horse, so i would encourage you to wear something that you wouldnt necessarily wear around your horse.
