What’s in My Camera Bag?

Ever wondered what a dog and horse photographer brings to a shoot? As a Southwell-based equine and canine photographer, my boot space is my mobile kit room — and I like to think it’s a well-honed balance of professional Nikon gear, practical tools, and a few quirky essentials.

The image below offers a real behind-the-scenes look at how I pack and prep before heading out on location:

From my trusted Nikon bodies to spare leads and baby wipes, everything has its place — and its purpose.

Nikon Mirrorless Cameras for Precision and Reliability

I work with two Nikon mirrorless camera bodies:

Nikon Z9 – my main camera for high-speed, high-res work

Nikon Z6iii – my dependable backup, lightweight and perfect for second angles

These give me the flexibility and speed I need to photograph horses in motion or catch that perfect moment with a playful dog.

Favourite Lenses (and When I Use Them)

My lens kit includes:

Nikon Z 70–200mm f/2.8 – for flattering horse portraits and beautiful background compression

Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 – great for environmental shots and close moments with dogs

Nikon Z 24–70mm f/2.8 – an all-rounder, ideal when I’m working quickly or changing distances

Each lens helps me tell the story of the session — whether elegant and composed or muddy and full of movement!

Practical Kit for a Smooth Session

I never leave home without:

Spare batteries and dual memory cards

Microfibre cloths to wipe down lenses or clean dusty tack

Waterproof coat — essential in the British countryside

Baby wipes – always handy for paws, boots or noses

Spare leads and rope halters – to match bridles, head collars, Halties etc for the perfect image

Squeaky toy and crinkly wrapper – perfect for catching a dog’s attentionTreats to reward good behaviour

My classic Billingham camera bag – rugged, stylish, and always organisedIt’s this combination of high-performance Nikon equipment and thoughtful extras that allows me to work confidently in any setting — from muddy paddocks to golden fields.
